You love making candles.

Step 2 - Figure Out Your Costs and Set Profitable Prices

This is where most new candle makers make their biggest mistake.

They price their candles based on what they think people will pay instead of what it actually costs to make them.

Here is the truth. If you are not pricing for profit you are running a very expensive hobby. Not a business.

To price correctly you need to know your exact cost per candle including:

• Wax
• Fragrance oil
• Wicks
• Vessel
• Labels and packaging
• Your time
• Shipping supplies
• Platform fees

Add all of that up. Then multiply by at least 3 to 4 times for retail pricing. That is your starting point.

Step 3 - Choose Your Business Name and Brand

Your brand is more than a logo.

It is the feeling people get when they interact with your business. The colors you choose. The words you use. The story you tell.

When choosing your business name keep it simple, memorable and searchable. Make sure the name is available as a social media handle and a domain name before you commit to it.

Then build your brand around your why.

Why did you start making candles? Who are you making them for? What feeling do you want your customers to have when they light your candle?

Answer those questions and your brand will start to build itself. 💛

Step 4 - Set Up Your Online Store

You do not need a physical location to run a successful candle business.

What you do need is a professional online store that makes it easy for customers to find you, trust you and buy from you.

Etsy is great for getting your first sales because the traffic is already there. But long term you want your own store so you are not dependent on a platform you do not own.

Step 5 - Build Your Social Media Presence

Social media is one of the most powerful free tools available to a small candle business.

You do not need to be on every platform. You need to be consistent on the ones where your customers already are.

For candle businesses the top platforms are:

• Facebook - Great for community building and paid ads
• Instagram - Visual platform perfect for product photography
• TikTok - Fastest growing platform for product discovery
• Pinterest - Long term SEO traffic driver for product pages

Pick 2 or 3 to start. Show up consistently. And focus on building genuine connections with your audience before you worry about selling. 💛

Step 6 - Start Building Your Email List From Day One

This is the advice I wish someone had given me on day one.

Your social media following can disappear overnight if a platform changes its algorithm or shuts down. Your email list is yours forever.

Start collecting email addresses from the very beginning. Offer a freebie. Run a giveaway. Add a signup form to your website.

Then email your list consistently with value, updates and exclusive offers.

Step 7 - Register Your Business

Once you are ready to take things seriously it is time to make it official.

Here are the basic steps to register your candle business.

1. Choose your business structure. Most small candle businesses start as a sole proprietorship or LLC.
2. Register your business name with your state.
3. Get an EIN from the IRS. It is free and you need it for taxes and opening a business bank account.
4. Open a separate business bank account. Never mix personal and business finances.
5. Look into business insurance. Candle making has liability considerations and protecting yourself is important.
