Let's talk about something that drives me a little crazy.

You buy a candle. You are excited. You light it. And somehow, it tunnels down the middle, barely throws any scent, and is gone way faster than you thought it would be.

I have been hand pouring candles for over 20 years, and I promise you, it is not you. Most of the time, it just comes down to a few small habits nobody ever explains. So let's fix that.

Your First Burn Matters More Than You Think

Here is the one tip that changes everything. The first time you burn a candle, let it go until the wax pool reaches all the way to the edges of the container.

I know, it takes patience. But this first burn sets what is called a memory ring. Your candle remembers how far it melted that first time, and it tends to repeat that pattern every time after. Stop too early, and your candle will tunnel down the middle for the rest of its life.

Trim That Wick

Before every single burn, trim your wick down to about a quarter inch.

A long wick causes a bigger flame than you need, more soot, and sometimes that weird mushroom shape on the tip. A trimmed wick burns cleaner, smells better, and helps your candle last longer overall. It takes ten seconds and makes a real difference.

Do Not Burn It Forever

I get it, candles are cozy and you do not want to blow them out. But burning a candle for too long in one sitting is not doing you any favors.

Try to keep each burn session to about three to four hours. Burning longer than that can overheat the wax, shorten your candle's life, and even affect how well it throws scent. Shorter, intentional burns actually get you more use out of your candle in the long run.

Give Your Candle Some Space

This one is part safety, part performance. Keep your candle away from drafts, fans, air vents, and direct sunlight. Set it on a flat, heat safe surface where it will not get bumped or knocked around.

Drafts especially cause uneven burning and can make your flame flicker or smoke more than it should.

Store It the Right Way Between Burns

When your candle is not lit, keep the lid on if it came with one. Store it somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight.

This protects the fragrance oil inside from breaking down too fast, so your candle still smells amazing weeks or months later, not just the first time you light it.

Know When to Stop

Once your candle has about half an inch of wax left, it is time to stop burning it. At that point, the wick is too close to the bottom, and continuing to burn it becomes a safety risk.

But do not toss that container just yet. That leftover wax and fragrance still has some life in it. This is actually one of my favorite reasons to keep a few wax melts on hand too, they let you enjoy fragrance without needing a full candle burning the whole time.

Small Habits, Big Difference

None of these tips are complicated. They just are not something most people ever get told. A few small habits, and your candle will burn cleaner, smell stronger, and last so much longer than before.

That is the whole goal here at Kandie's Scents. Every candle is hand poured with care, and I want you to get the absolute most out of every single one.
