Lessons from the Glow: What 4 Years in Business Taught Me

Year 1: The Spark — Finding My Flame 🔥

I started Kandie’s Scents with a simple love for all things that smell good and a soul that needed soothing. Candle making was therapeutic, a creative escape that helped me find peace in chaos. That spark led me to pour my very first batch—not just of wax, but of passion, purpose, and possibility.

I didn’t have a roadmap. I had a vision. And honestly? I wish I knew then what I know now: how important it is to niche down, learn your audience, and understand that running a candle business is not just crafting—it’s chemistry, it’s marketing, it’s business. And yes, it gets expensive fast.

But that first year gave me something priceless: belief. I believed in myself, and I knew others would too.

Year 2: The Flicker — Trials, Testing & Truths 🕯️

This year was about trial by fire—literally. I wasted more supplies than I care to admit, but each candle taught me something new. I had to master my craft, not just enjoy it. There were moments I felt like giving up… but I didn’t.

One hard lesson: not everyone who says they’ll support you will actually follow through. And that’s okay. I learned to be grateful for those who show up—and to stop chasing those who don’t.

Year 3: The Glow-Up — Growth, Grit & Grace ✨

This is when Kandie’s Scents started blooming in a big way. I stepped into new collections, a growing online presence, and a physical location at Painted Tree. That booth wasn’t just a milestone—it was a manifestation.

But this year also tested me in ways I never expected. A major neck surgery took me out physically. I couldn’t lift more than 5 pounds, and it shook everything I had built. But instead of giving up, I shifted. I worked on my back end systems, tapped into creative classes, and leaned on the love and support of my family, friends, and customers.

Those quiet months reminded me: you can’t control everything… but you can control how you pivot.

Year 4: The Flame Burns Brighter — Clarity, Confidence & Community 🕯️💪🏽

Now, four years in, I know exactly who I am—and who my brand is. Kandie’s Scents is luxury with heart. It’s storytelling, scent therapy, and soulful living wrapped into a matte black jar.

I’ve grown so much—not just as a chandler, but as a businesswoman. I finally understand my customer. I know they’re not just buying candles; they’re buying moments, ambiance, memories. And I’ve scaled my releases to reflect that.

This year, I’m most excited to step beyond candles with the launch of KS Merch & Apparel on March 1st. Plus, I’ll be returning with the beloved Love in Bloom Collection on January 20th, followed by Dreamscape, Marbled Glow, and Whispers of Spring. It’s going to be a packed season of scent, style, and soulful storytelling.

Lessons from the Wick 🔥

These past four years have shown me:

• Storytelling is a dialogue. Building a brand isn’t just about what you say—it’s about how you connect.
• Self-care is the best care. You can’t pour from an empty vessel.
• Faith, family, and focus will carry you further than fear ever could.
• You can’t do it all. And you don’t have to. Do what you can, with what you have, and keep going.

My Advice to New Business Owners

✨ Research, test, and start small

✨ Scale when you’re ready—not when the algorithm says you should

✨ It’s okay to fall behind or fall apart… just don’t give up

✨ Focus on what you can do, not what you can’t
