How to Price Your Candles and Actually Make a Profit: A Real Guide From a Real Candle Maker

How to Price Your Candles and Actually Make a Profit

Let me ask you something honest.

Do you know exactly how much it costs you to make one candle?

Not a guess. Not a rough estimate. The exact number down to the penny.

If you hesitated on that answer you are not alone. And it is costing you money every single time you sell a candle. 💛

Pricing is one of the most uncomfortable topics in the candle making world. Most makers either charge too little because they are afraid nobody will pay more or they pull a number out of thin air and hope for the best.

Neither one is a strategy.

Today we are going to fix that. 🕯️

Why Most Candle Makers Underprice Their Products

Here is the honest truth.

Most candle makers underprice because they do not know their actual costs. And the ones who do know their costs still underprice because they are afraid of what people will think.

Sound familiar?

Here is what underpricing actually costs you.

  • You work harder for less money
  • You cannot afford to restock supplies
  • You burn out faster because the reward does not match the effort
  • You attract bargain hunters instead of loyal customers who value your craft
  • You slowly resent the business you once loved

You did not start making candles to work for free. 💛

Your time has value. Your craft has value. Your product has value.

It is time to price like it. 🔥

The 3 Biggest Pricing Mistakes Candle Makers Make

Before we get into the formula let me walk you through the most common mistakes so you can avoid them.

Mistake 1 - Only Counting Material Costs

Most candle makers add up their wax, fragrance oil, wick and vessel and call it their cost.

But that is only part of the picture.

Your true cost per candle includes:

  • Wax
  • Fragrance oil
  • Wick
  • Vessel
  • Label and packaging
  • Shipping supplies
  • Your time to make it
  • Your time to photograph it
  • Your time to package and ship it
  • Platform fees and transaction fees
  • Overhead costs like utilities and equipment

When you leave any of these out you are quietly paying for them out of your profit margin. 💛

Mistake 2 - Pricing Based on Competitors

Looking at what other candle makers charge and pricing to match is one of the fastest ways to undervalue your work.

You do not know their costs. You do not know their margins. You do not know if they are even profitable.

Price based on YOUR numbers. Not someone else's. 🕯️

Mistake 3 - Not Paying Yourself

This one hurts the most.

So many candle makers factor in every cost except the most important one.

Their own time.

If you spend 2 hours making a batch of 12 candles and you do not count that time in your pricing you are essentially working for free.

Your time is not free. Even if it feels like a labor of love.

Pay yourself. You earned it. 💛

The Candle Pricing Formula

Here is a simple formula to get you started.

Step 1 - Calculate Your Cost of Goods Sold (COGS)

Add up every material cost that goes into one candle.

  • Wax per candle
  • Fragrance oil per candle
  • Wick per candle
  • Vessel per candle
  • Label per candle
  • Packaging materials per candle

This is your base material cost.

Step 2 - Add Your Labor Cost

Decide on an hourly rate for yourself. Even if you are just starting out give yourself at least minimum wage.

Divide that hourly rate by how many candles you can make in an hour.

That is your labor cost per candle.

Add it to your material cost.

Step 3 - Add Your Overhead

Overhead includes things like:

  • A portion of your utilities
  • Equipment wear and tear
  • Packaging tape and shipping supplies
  • Platform fees

Estimate a monthly overhead number and divide it by how many candles you sell per month.

Add that to your running total.

Step 4 - Apply Your Profit Margin

Now multiply your total cost by your desired profit margin.

For handmade products most makers aim for a 3x to 4x markup for retail pricing.

So if your true cost per candle is $8 your retail price should be between $24 and $32.

That is not being greedy. That is being a sustainable business owner. 💛

Step 5 - Check Your Numbers

Once you have your price ask yourself these questions.

  • Does this price reflect the quality and value of my product?
  • Can I sustain this business at this price point long term?
  • Am I paying myself fairly for my time?

If the answer to all three is yes you have found your price. 🕯️

What About Wholesale Pricing?

If you ever want to sell your candles wholesale to boutiques or retailers you will need a separate wholesale price.

A standard wholesale price is typically 50% of your retail price.

So if your candle retails for $28 your wholesale price would be $14.

Make sure your costs allow for this before you agree to any wholesale arrangements. You need to be profitable at wholesale not just at retail. 💛

Real Talk About Raising Your Prices

Maybe you have been selling candles for a while at prices you know are too low.

And now you are scared to raise them because you think you will lose customers.

Here is what I know from experience.

The customers who leave when you raise your prices were never your ideal customers anyway. They were buying based on price not based on the value of your product.

The customers who stay?

They love your candles. They trust your brand. They are happy to pay more because they know what they are getting. 💛

Raise your prices with confidence. Explain the value. And watch what happens.

You might be surprised. 🔥

Your Next Step

Pricing does not have to be complicated. But it does have to be intentional.
